Are there any restrictions for setting up a margin lending account?

The following restrictions exist when applying for a Margin Lending account:

  • Must be a permanant Australian resident
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Cannot be opened for a Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF)
  • Must pass CommSec’s standard credit assessment criteria.


Account types which can be set up under a Margin Loan include:

  • Individual account
  • Trust account with Individual or Joint Trustee(s)
  • Company account
  • Trust where the Trustee is a Company.
