How to create a strong password

Creating a strong password is the best way to keep your CommSec account safe. Your password can include any combination of letters, numbers, and symbols, but it must be at least 8 characters long.

Here are some tips for creating a strong password.

Choose a longer password

Longer passwords are more secure than shorter passwords. We’ve set a minimum length of 8 characters for CommSec passwords, but creating a password even longer than this will help keep your account safe. If you have trouble remembering a longer password, you could try using a line from a song or a quote from a movie.

Choose unique passwords

Try to use a different password for each of your online accounts (for example, your CommSec account and your email). If you use the same password for different accounts and somebody accesses the password for one of the accounts, they may be able to use it to access the other accounts too.

Here are a few tips that can help you create longer passwords that are easier to remember. Examples of what you can try to use:

  • A lyric from a song or poem
  • A meaningful quote from a movie or speech
  • A passage from a book
  • A series of words that are meaningful to you
  • An abbreviation: Make a password from the first letter of each word in a sentence

Avoid personal details

Don’t create a password using personal details, for example, your birthday or the name of your pet. Other people might know these details about you - or they could easily find out.
